The ABC’s of Sunscreen
We all know how important it is to wear sunscreen but how much do we really know about it? We’ve come up with the ABC’s of Sunscreen to help you find the right sunscreen for you.
UVA Rays:
UVA rays are associated with the premature aging effects of the sun, such as wrinkling. In high doses they can also cause skin cancers. UVA rays are especially dangerous because they penetrate deeper into the skin and we can’t see the damage they cause until it’s too late. UVA rays are also responsible for lucitis or “sun allergy” which causes an extremely itchy rash
UVB Rays:
UVB rays penetrate into the superficial layer of the skin (epidermis) and cause sunburns, tans and certain skin cancers. The majority of sunscreens protect mostly against UVB rays.
Choosing a sunscreen:
Currently the only chemical that is proven to be effective in blocking all UVA rays is Mexoryl. Mexoryl hasn’t been approved by the FDA, but it’s available for sale in Canada. Some of our sunscreens by La Roche Posay and Ombrelle contain Mexoryl, Titanium Dioxide and Parsol, three key ingredients to help reduce the damage caused by sun exposure.
Here are a few sunscreens that contain Mexoryl:
La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Cream SPF 60
La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Protection Stick SPF 60
