Night Cream 411

I was out with a friend the other day and she asked me: “What’s the deal with night cream?” She was playing around with the idea of having both a daytime and a nighttime skin care regime, but was fairly skeptical of the actual benefits. Is there really a difference between day creams and night creams?  The answer is yes! Are their benefits to have a nighttime skin care regime? The answer again is, yes!

When you sleep, the temperature of your skin minimally rises.  This slightly higher temperature allows your skin to better absorb lotions and serums.  Also, this is the best time for your skin to replenish itself because it gets a break from the wear and tear of sun exposure, wind exposure and gives your skin a chance to absorb product without the intrusion of makeup or impurities.

Night time creams are formulated to be richer then daytime formulas and they don’t contain SPF.  If you are interested in fighting the signs of aging, night creams may be able to offer you the proactive care you are seeking.  If you are interested in beginning a nighttime skin care regime (or you already have one) don’t forget about a few other moisture-starved areas you may want to spoil.  Applying night creams to your neck, feet, hands, elbows and knees will keep your skin quenched and happy!

Sandal Season Is Here!

After a long, brutal, cold, snowy–did I mention long?– winter, my feet were finally ready to be liberated from the confinement of wool socks and snow boots! Just a couple of days ago, I grabbed my Old Navy flip flops from the back of my closet, threw them on and headed out the door. The air between my toes felt phenomenal!

I arrived at The Red Brick Cafe, ordered my Iced Americano and sat down. Flip flops and iced coffee (as much as I hold them dear to my heart) probably couldn’t be enjoyed any more then I was enjoying them at that very moment.

Then I looked down…and to my own horror, realized that in the excitement of all of this I had forgotten one important thing…my feet! Oh my. They were in need of some desperate love and attention. I realized that as embarrassed as I was, this is a fairly common occurrence this time of year. This is also a problem that can be fixed quite simply. Here are some steps you can take in getting your feet sandal-worthy for the season:

1) Exfoliate – Pumice stones are a quick and effective way to exfoliate your feet of any excessively dry skin that may have accumulated over the winter months. Be sure to soak your feet in some warm water first for about 10 minutes, as this helps to soften skin and eases the removal of dead skin cells. After pumicing you can follow up by using an exfoliating foot scrub to remove any residual traces. Rinse well and finish off with an intensive moisturizer to replenish your feet. Here are some exfoliating tools and scrubs you might like to try:

2) Pedicure Time – There are a number of pedicure products on the market that make a home pedicure just as luxurious as a spa pedicure. Having these products on hand (–or should I say foot?) is always a great idea so that a pedicure at the end of a long day is always an option. Some of these tools help to provide the tough love your feet may need, but always be sure to follow up with a nutrient-rich luxurious moisturizer.

3) Daily Moisturizing - Many people keep a very intensive skin care regime for their face and body in the summer. Unfortunately, feet can be forgotten. A daily moisturizer will help to keep your feet soft and protected from the elements, preventing dryness, cracking or wrinkles. Applying moisturizer in both the morning and at night can make a world of difference. Here are some you may want to try:

4) To polish or not to polish? – This is entirely up to you…which is all part of the fun! If polish is something you are looking forward to and you feel like sporting some strikingly bright and fun shades, here are a few you might like:

Kick off your boots and get ready for a fabulous summer! Hope you enjoy these tips…I know my own feet were very, very thankful!

Well.ca does Elmira Maple Syrup Festival

Well.ca and friendsThis past weekend we made the short trip to Elmira for their annual Maple Syrup Festival – the world’s largest one day maple syrup festival! For some, it was the first time attending the festival, while others (particularly, Ali) were seasoned veterans.

We ate copious amounts of pancakes, watched the taffy making process (and got to taste the delicious results), and generally just ate ourselves silly! In fact, I think we may need to take a break from the sweet stuff for the next little while so we can recover from the maple syrup overload.

If you’re in the area you should really check it out next year – just make sure to arrive with an appetite. And if you happen to see us walking around, feel free to say hi. Ali will treat you to pancakes!

Treating Allergies Naturally

April showers bring May flowers… and allergies. While allergies are nothing new, many people are now seeking new ways to deal with their runny noses and itchy, watery eyes naturally. Who better to ask about this growing trend than my sister Dr. Barbara Dao, a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine? Read on to learn more about treating allergies naturally.

What are allergies?

Allergies are the result of the body’s immune system over-reacting to substances in the environment. Typical symptoms include: sneezing, runny nose, itchy or red eyes. Asthmatic symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath and cough are also considered part of an allergic reaction.

When are people affected by allergies?

Seasonal allergies are most commonly triggered by pollens, which include trees, weeds and grasses. These allergies tend to affect people from spring until late summer (depending on the type of plant that they are allergic to). People who suffer from allergies more so in the winter may be reacting to dust mites, pet dander or moulds.

How can you tell the difference between a cold and allergies?

When you have allergies, you do not have fever or other signs of infection. Also the time of year that allergies come on can be a clue that it is not a cold.

Why are people seeking natural treatments for allergies?

Often it is because they are frustrated by side effects from the medications and would rather use a natural approach to medication. My patients understand that by going to a more natural approach, we can get a better understanding of their health as a whole, and better identify why the allergy is present in the first place.

What are some natural ways to alleviate allergies?

Since allergies are an immune reaction, the goal is to normalize the immune system. There are nutrients that help to stabilize the immune system and act as natural anti-histamines, such as Vitamin C, quercetin and fish oils. Acupuncture, herbs and homeopathics are also safe and effective treatments in relieving allergies. Consulting a Naturopathic Doctor is a good way to determine what natural therapies will work best for the individual.

I’ve been hearing a lot about neti pots recently. What is a neti pot and how does it work?

A neti pot is a teapot-like device used to flush out the nasal passages using a saline solution. This helps to remove excess mucus, which helps relieve sinus congestion and prevent infection.

Dr. Dao is an active member of the provincial and national Naturopathic Associations. She is located in Cambridge, Ontario and practices at Eaton Family Health Care.
