Night Cream 411
I was out with a friend the other day and she asked me: “What’s the deal with night cream?” She was playing around with the idea of having both a daytime and a nighttime skin care regime, but was fairly skeptical of the actual benefits. Is there really a difference between day creams and night creams? The answer is yes! Are their benefits to have a nighttime skin care regime? The answer again is, yes!
When you sleep, the temperature of your skin minimally rises. This slightly higher temperature allows your skin to better absorb lotions and serums. Also, this is the best time for your skin to replenish itself because it gets a break from the wear and tear of sun exposure, wind exposure and gives your skin a chance to absorb product without the intrusion of makeup or impurities.
Night time creams are formulated to be richer then daytime formulas and they don’t contain SPF. If you are interested in fighting the signs of aging, night creams may be able to offer you the proactive care you are seeking. If you are interested in beginning a nighttime skin care regime (or you already have one) don’t forget about a few other moisture-starved areas you may want to spoil. Applying night creams to your neck, feet, hands, elbows and knees will keep your skin quenched and happy!

It’s so funny because I always thought there wasn’t much of a difference between a night cream and a day cream either, but once I actually started a night cream regime, I changed my mind. I find it absolutely essential for maintaining moisture in my skin, especially with 30 coming around the bend soon enough……
I just started using Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Overnight Regenerating Cream (phew, that’s a mouthful!) and I love it. I’ve really seen a difference in my skin since I started using it.
I never really understood the difference between night creams and regular moisturizers so thanks for enlightening us, Emily!
Hi Emily,
Nice how you educated us about the difference of day and night creams. Thanks for the quick tut.
If only more people knew this! It is essential if you’re serious about your anti-aging regimen to use both a night cream and a day cream. In addition, using a serum before you apply your night cream can help with absorption.
