Think of all the personal care items you use every day…. like shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, facial cleanser, body moisturizer. Now imagine that you had to leave your home suddenly and leave all those things behind.

For women and children in Guelph and Wellington County, Marianne’s Place is a safe alternative to a violent home. Each year, nearly 300 women and children stay at Marianne’s Place, a shelter for abused women and their children. Some mothers and children have to leave their homes in the middle of the night, taking only their clothes and whatever they can carry. When they arrive at Marianne’s Place, they are given the daily essentials that everyone needs — like toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo.

Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis is excited about working with Well.ca to bring personal care items to women and children staying at Marianne’s Place. “Shampoo, deodorant, baby wipes, moisturizer— these are all things that women and their children use every day. So we’re very happy that Well.ca is working with us locally to bring these much needed items to women at Marianne’s Place” says Zhaleh Afshar, Public Educator at Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis.

This holiday season, give a meaningful gift for a mother and child staying at Marianne’s Place shelter. Choose from one of our four wellness packages or purchase all four to give a complete Welcome Basket for a woman and her child. Once you order the package, Well.ca will deliver it to the women and children staying at Marianne’s Place on your behalf.

Dry Scalp Dilemma

Snowflakes aren’t the only white flakes that appear in the wintertime. Many people suffer from dry, itchy scalps and white flakes year round, but the combination of cold weather and hot, dry air can make the problem even worse. While there is no cure for dandruff, there are ways to make the problem more manageable.

Dry skin is the most common cause of an itchy, flaky scalp. Try washing your hair with cooler water and skip the blow dryer if you can. The extra heat can aggravate your scalp, making it dryer and more prone to flaking. You may also see an improvement in your scalp’s health if you wash your hair more often, making sure to massage your scalp with a moisturizing shampoo or conditioner.

If your problem persists there are many shampoos available that can help alleviate your dandruff. A natural solution is using a shampoo that contains tea tree oil, such as Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Shampoo, or simply adding a few drops of tea tree oil to your existing shampoo.

You can also try medicated anti-dandruff shampoos that contain selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, salicylic acid, or sulfur. If the flakes persist after two weeks, it’s a good idea to see your doctor.
