A Great Start

Up until recently, a cup of coffee first thing in the morning was my most crucial ritual of the day. I would roll out of bed on a quest to get my cup of joe before I could even think about doing anything else….then I got a puppy.

Waking up 3 times throughout the night was starting to take its toll.  She has been an amazing puppy, let me tell you–well worth it.  However, I knew it was time to take care of myself or I was going to get sick. I found myself waking up absolutely parched, so my new go-to was a tall glass of water.

I started reading about the benefits of starting your day off with a glass of lemon water and upgraded my routine. I noticed right away how much better this made me feel.

All I do is squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a cup of room temperature water and voila! I still enjoy a coffee later on, but one glass of lemon water is definitely the perfect early morning ritual.

Here are the benefits:

* Lemon water can stimulate your liver and kidneys and aids in purifying and dissolving harmful toxins that have built up in your system.

* Lemons can help protect you from infections. Lemons contain vitamin C and antioxidants that help to neutralize free-radicals and toxins which would otherwise be harmful to your immune system.

* This natural detoxification combined with the rich vitamin C helps to promote a healthy and glowing complexion.

* Lemon water helps your digestive system by easing any bloating, heartburn and constipation.

Are there any early morning rituals you swear by to keep you feeling and looking great?

Going With the Green

Drinking just a few cups of green tea a day might be one of the easiest ways to keep feeling and looking fantastic over the long term.  Here are just a few of the priceless benefits of drinking green tea:

Mighty Antioxidants – Our poor bodies are exposed to a number of harmful pollutants on a daily basis.  Free radicals are unstable chemicals naturally formed within us as our bodies react to these pollutants. Free radicals attack our healthy cells causing them to age prematurely.  Premature aging– what a frightening thought!  Luckily, the antioxidants found in green tea help to neutralize these chemicals and can even repair the damage that may have already started to cause.

Natural Metabolic Booster – Green tea contains catechins that naturally work to boost your metabolism which can help to burn more calories from fat.  Talk about a tea that goes to work for you!  The mild caffeine levels found in green tea coupled with this slight metabolic boost have been proven to be a powerful team.

Keep Calm & Sip On- One other little gem that you can find in a cup of green tea is the amino acid L-theanine.  L-theanine has been known to help reduce stress and anxiety by inducing a state of calm without the drowsy side effects.  It has also been known to increase focus.  Given the hustle and bustle of the daily grind, a calm focus can be a really great balance to achieve.

Made in Canada: Part 2

998524_54637690Keeping a house in sparkling condition can be a daunting task, especially this time of year. A hectic schedule coupled with kids or pets tracking through snowy and salty messes can really start to feel like a losing battle.

There are a myriad of cleaning products available for every possible need you could have.  Unfortunately, most products on the market have harsh chemical-based ingredients that can be harmful to your home environment and air quality.

There is an ever-growing breadth of natural household cleaners available that are made right here in Canada.   I decided to feature a few Green & Natural brands that you may want to know more a little more about.

Attitude is a fabulous line of Canadian cleaning products.  Attitude products are formulated with renewable and plant-based ingredients that have proven to be very effective in my home.  The packaging is innovative and eco-conscious.  The product range includes fabric care, dish care, surface cleansers and air purifiers.

Earth Matters is another amazing product line which are derived from natural plant-sourced ingredients.  They are hypoallergenic, non-toxic and free from animal ingredients, enzymes, dyes, optical brighteners, SLS, APEO, DEA, phosphates and other harsh chemicals.  In addition to offering environmentally conscious products, Earth Matters happens to be a socially responsible company.  They donate 1% of all of their sales to charity each year.

Nature Clean products have been around since 1963 and they use simple and natural formulations that are environmentally responsible, hypoallergenic, biodegradable and non-toxic.   Nature Clean boasts that all the products are “Made by really nice Canadians”.  They offer an extensive line of products, just a few of them include a pet stain remover, furniture polish, tile cleaner, drain cleaner .

It’s important to become aware of what we bring into our homes. In an attempt to keep things clean and germ-free we could actually be causing more harm then good if we choose the wrong products.  Reaching for natural products and reading the ingredients is a great first step. Research the companies who offer these brands so you can feel really confident about the choices you make.
