Halloween at Well.ca

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, the Well.ca team is kind of like a big bunch of kids sometimes.

Case in point: Halloween.

We had a dress up day, a desk decorating contest, and an intra-office trick-or-treating time to make sure everyone got their fair share  of sugar!

We tried to play the Monster Mash over the intercom system, but it wasn’t loud enough, so instead we just stood in a circle and observed each others’ creativity.

There was a baby, Luigi, a member of the Jabberwockeez, a Cowboy, Rogue from X-men, two pirates, and a superman! Great job to the Green Team, 5 of whom dressed up as Zombies! Even our Toronto team mates joined in!

These are some of the better shots of the fun. Those whose pictures aren’t posted include the rest of the zombies, an accident victim, a Gorilla, Bonnie and Clyde, and a professional baseball player.

Thanks again to everyone who participated in the Halloween antics! And remember everyone, keep safe out there this weekend. Happy Halloween!

Spooky Snack Ideas

Here are some super fun snack idea for kids and adults alike from our friends at Canadian Family!

Lady Fingers

One of our shipping team members brought some in around this time last year, so this year we thought it would be fun to share the love. You can find baking powder, organic cane sugar, and whole almonds at Well.ca.

Brainy Cupcakes

A twist on regular cupcakes– little brains!! They may look a little yucky but the taste is up to you! Get your icing sugar and cocoa powder here!

Edible Eyeballs!

These look like a bit more work, but definitely worth it! So much fun. If you’ve got a peanut allergy in the family, you can try making this with Soy Nut Butter, or for chocolate fans, Chocolate Soy Nut Butter!

It’s Moisturizer Season

It’s that time of year again! Time to stock up on moisturizer and keep your skin from becoming dry, red, and itchy. Take a look at some of Well.ca’s most popular moisturizers to help keep dry winter skin at bay.

UV Protection: Don’t let those clouds fool you. You still need protection from the sun’s harmful rays even on the cloudiest of days.

Calming and Hydrating: With hot, dry air in the house, and cold, dry air outside, it’s hard to escape from the drying winter air.

Sensitive Skin: If, in addition to winter dryness, you suffer from sensitive, acne prone skin, the following products might help.

Organic and Natural: Worried about the strange-sounding ingredients, weird chemicals, and the possibility that the products you use have been tested on animals? Here are some safe, effective and healthy alternatives.

Hand and Body: Because it’s not just your face that needs moisturizing!

Nature News: An Introduction

Hi, I’m Adam, from Well.ca’s shipping department! Over in shipping, we work with natural products all day long, as we pack them for your orders. Nature News came about because we had so many questions about the natural ingredients in our products that Sarah (now a shipping alumni) decided to do a weekly lesson on them for the shipping team. We’ve learned some really cool things, and as the new Nature News anchor, I thought it would be fun to share them with you through the Well.ca blog!

I am not a doctor or scientist, and thus cannot verify any of the claimed effects of these products. I would simply like to share with you the common uses or intended effects of certain natural products. However, I do have great faith in the products that we sell! I will try to make it fun, include some quirky facts, and keep it as informative as possible.

Stay tuned for more Nature News. Enjoy!

What’s a Detox Diet?

Also known as a colon cleanse or cleanse diet, it is meant to cleanse the body of harmful toxins that alternative health care practitioners believe build up in the body over time. But be careful: as with any diet, detoxes and cleanses should be undertaken with caution.

Toxins are everywhere– from pesticides and hormones in our food to pollution in the air, we absorb and digest foreign substances constantly. The purpose of the detox diet is to cleanse your body by restricting what you eat to a short list of acceptable foods that are free of toxins. This gives the body a chance to eliminate the buildup of toxic substances in the bowels.

The results of any detox depend on your chosen method, and there are many. And although there are critics of detox diets and cleanses, it’s hard to deny that limiting your intake of sugars, caffeine, processed foods and fats is a good thing. Some of the reputed effects of the diet include a higher ability to concentrate, increased energy levels, and better overall digestive health.

If you are looking for products to assist you with your detox, visit our Detox & Cleanse category, and check out these favourites:

A word of warning: it is important to consult your health care professional before starting a detox. Drastic diet changes can profoundly affect your health. Detoxes and cleanses should be undertaken with the utmost care to ensure the maximum benefit.

Sbanduk:
Dr. Ho! Great to have you join us this morning. We’ll begin taking questions in 5 minutes.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 9:57

Dr.Ho:
I apologize as we are having some connection issues in China.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 9:58

Dr.Ho:

So I am on Skype answering the questions and Vincent is typing from Canada
Tuesday October 12, 2010 9:59

[Comment From Michael: ]

Hello Dr. Ho, How effective is your muscle therapy system at treating repetitive stress injuries like elbow tendonitis, sports related knee pain and lower back pain? Can it be used daily as a preventative measure and how effective is it at preventing and limiting injuries such as these?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:00

Dr.Ho:
Hi Michael, the muscle therapy system is very effective in treating rsi injuries. In fact, what a lot of people don’t know is that the system is a registered medical device with Health Canada for the past 15 years and also has clinical studies done at the university of waterloo proving it’s effectiveness that have been published in third party medical journal
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:03

[Comment From Michael: ]
Thank you
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:03

Sbanduk:

We’re getting some questions about the Digestive Detox. Would you like to talk a bit about that product, Dr. Ho? Here are the questions!
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:04

[Comment From Laura: ]

Will the digestive detox kit help me lose weight?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:04

[Comment From Jane: ]

What does digesting detox actually do to the body? I am interested in doing one but do not quite understand how I will feel during the detox. will i feel tired? i am already low on vitamin b12 and worry about this.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:04

Dr.Ho:

The way the muscle therapy system works is through stimulating the nerve to relax the muscle, improve circulation and relieve the pain. In your case of tendonitis and knee pain, it will help pump more blood to the ligaments and improve the circulation to promote faster healing of the inflamed tendon / ligament
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:05

[Comment From Didi: ]
Hi Dr. Ho. What is different about your muscle theapy system than others? Thank you.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:06

Dr.Ho:
the digestive detox’s main function is not weight loss. However, I recommend to all my patients to cleanse the digestive tract with the detox system first to prepare and give your body the best chance to lose weight
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:06

Dr.Ho:
a lot of people have trouble losing weight because of built up waste in the digestive tract. This prevents the body from being able to absorb the nutrients from our food. This results in us over eating and eating too much of the foods that our high in sugar. We like the foods high in sugar because even though we may be physically full, our body feels malnurished and lacking energy because the nutrients aren’t absorbing properly. This can cause a lowering of the metabolism and weight gain.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:08

[Comment From Laura: ]

Okay… so what is the best way to use the detox then? Should I be combining the kit with a change in my diet?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:09

Dr.Ho:

The detox system will cleanse the body of toxins and built up waste. However, the most important part is that it helps to target the cause of the problem, so that after the cleanse you stay regular and bloat free. I don’t want you to have to rely on any product for the rest of your life. This product is developed to actually help fix the cause of your problem.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:10

[Comment From Laura: ]

Interesting. I didn’t know that!
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:10

Sbanduk:
Thanks so much, Dr. Ho! Let’s go back to Didi’s question: Hi Dr. Ho. What is different about your muscle theapy system than others? Thank you.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:11

Dr.Ho:
I am a passionate advocate of lifestyle. we do provide you with a healthy meal guide as well. Being active, eating healthy and thinking positive is my motto in life.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:11

Dr.Ho:

sorry sorry Didi. And sorry everyone for such long answers
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:11

Dr.Ho:
Didi: The difference between my unit and other units is very distinct. Most units are a TENS unit. We have combined TENS with Interferrential technology.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:12

Dr.Ho:
The benefit of interferrential technology is that it causes the stimulation and frequency to be completely random. By having a random frequency, your body can’t anticipate or get used to the sensation. This is how my patients get substantially better results. It’s like exercise, when you do the same workout everyday, the results start to plateau, because your body gets used to it. Our machine is like having a different exercise every few seconds.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:14

Dr.Ho:

Didi, what condition/ pain do you suffer from?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:16

[Comment From Didi: ]

Thanks Dr. Ho. That makes a lot of sense. Very interesting.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:16

[Comment From Didi: ]

Dr. Ho I suffer from severe neck pain which causes headaches.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:16

Dr.Ho:
okay. That is very common. What you would do is use the small pads on the base of your neck ( just after your hairline ). lay down and have either a pillow or rolled up towel to support the neck and keep the pads pressed against the neck. This is by far the most effective treatment for treating neck pain and headaches.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:18

[Comment From Nicole: ]
Hi Dr. Ho! I was reading about your Cold and Flu formula, and with so many cold and flu products out there, I was interested to learn that yours is all natural. Could you tell me a bit more about Paractin?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:19

Dr.Ho:
when the c1 and c2 nerves get pinched by the muscle tension in the neck, it causes the headaches that run from the back of your head to right behind your eye and beside your temple. that’s why people rub their temples when they have headaches. they are essentially trying to stimulate that nerve
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:20

[Comment From Didi: ]
Thank you so much for this info Dr. Ho.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:20

Dr.Ho:
Hi Nicole! A lot of cold and flu formulas can either make you drowsy or their main function is to boost your metabolism to help you fight off the cold / flu
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:21

[Comment From Nicole: ]
That’s great information, Dr. Ho. Thanks so much!
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:23

[Comment From Shehnaz: ]
How do you deal with hot flashes?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:23

Dr.Ho:
our cold and flu will also help boost your immune system but we have also incorporated Paractin which is a patent formula in itself. Paractin actually will help to fight the cold / flu. There have been many clinicals that have been done with this ingredient with great results. I find with my patients that within a day, people are almost 100% better. It is a remarkable ingredient that I honestly didn’t realize was so effective until we incorporated it
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:23

[Comment From Bill: ]
I have a quick question about Paractin. How did you decide to incorporate it in the first place?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:25

Dr.Ho:
My best recommendation for hot flashes is exercise, sleep at a regular hour and take a multivitamin
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:25

Dr.Ho:
I have found my patients that are able to do light exercise for 30mins/ day, find their menopause systems decrease quite effectively.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:26

[Comment From Jacki: ]
Dr. Ho…I always get headaches from work. Do you have anything for headaches?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:27

Dr.Ho:
I decided to use Paractin after reading the science behind the ingredient. A lot of companies will market an ingredient that is more style than substance. However, the science to me makes sense and I used it and found it very effective.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:28

[Comment From Shehnaz: ]
Thanks for the info Dr. Ho. Much appreciated!
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:29

Dr.Ho:
First thing you should do is try to be conscious of your posture during work. make sure your not constantly looking down. try to take a couple breaks to give your neck and back some rest from sitting all day. after that, when you come home, use the muscle therapy system on your neck. It will help to relieve the tension and improve your circulation back to your head, neck and shoulders. This at home treatment usually will only take 20 mins for your headache to go away.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:31

Dr.Ho:
absolutely jane. the detox works even if you are low on b12
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:31

[Comment From Jane: ]
Dr Ho. does the detox work even if someone is low on vitamin b12. I try taking supplement but do not seem able to raise it. I would really like to do a detox but worry…
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:32

Dr.Ho:
a lot of cleanses make people feel even more tired than they were before starting the cleanse. the reason for that is because so many are stimulant laxatives that force you to eliminate. the good and bad nutrients will be eliminated this way and this is why people feel so tired while doing those cleanses.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:33

Dr.Ho:
jane, remember when we talked about weight loss and nutrient absorption?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:33

[Comment From Jane: ]
so would you recommended taking time off work for example at the start?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:33

Dr.Ho:
that is a perfect example. you tried taking a b12 supplement but was having problems with absorption. The reason, just like weight gain, is because if your body has a lot of built up waste inside, it prevents the nutrient absorption. however, after you cleanse your digestive tract, you will then be able to absorb your b12 and have the much needed energy
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:35

Dr.Ho:
absolutely not. Our system is not a laxative that’s going to flush your system out. I formulated this product to help retrain your digestive tract for longterm benefit. You will not have to rush to the washroom, have diarrhea or feel exhausted. this kit is formulated to address the cause of the problem so that even after your cleanse, you will continue to experience the benefits of a health digestive system.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:37

[Comment From Jane: ]
Thanks. I will try. I am just worried about being too tired. But I have never tried a detox and am at a point where I think it is a good idea
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:37

[Comment From Laura: ]
This may be a weird question but I have a chronic ache in the muscles of my throat. It started when I had a nasal drip from a cold but it’s been there for months and won’t go away. Do you have any advice for that?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:38

Dr.Ho:
Laura, have you seen your doctor regarding that yet?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:38

[Comment From Laura: ]
I mentioned it but she said it was probably just stress, and I should try drinking more water and deep breathing.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:40

[Comment From Laura: ]
But that hasn’t helped.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:40

Dr.Ho:
it’s definitely an odd place to have an ache
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:40

Dr.Ho:
did you sneeze a lot when you had your nasal drip? did you take any medication?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:40

[Comment From Laura: ]
Yes, it was a bad cold and there was lots of sneezing, nose-blowing, etc. I took some over the counter cold and sinus meds.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:41

Dr.Ho:
jane: thank you so much for giving the detox a try. rest assured, that the first thing people experience with the detox is a boost in energy. we also have 24 hr customer support, so please call us anytime and we will be more than happy to guide you through your cleanse one step at a time.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:41

Dr.Ho:
when you sneezed, do you hold it in? ie. pinch your nose?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:42

[Comment From Laura: ]
Not really!
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:44

[Comment From Jacki: ]
And treating my neck is going to help get rid of my headaches? Right now all I do is take tylenol…will this help me prevent headaches too?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:44

Sbanduk:
We only have 15 minutes left of our live chat with Dr. Ho! Get your questions in now :)
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:45

Dr.Ho:
yes, by treating your neck it will help relax the tense muscles that can be pinching the nerves leading to your head. when the muscles are not pinching the nerve you will have proper circulation and you will get relief from your headaches.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:45

Dr.Ho:

definitely, use the muscle therapy at night prior to sleeping, by retraining the neck muscles to stay relaxed, you can help prevent the onset of headaches.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:46

Dr.Ho:
Laura: without actually consulting you, it sounds like through blowing your nose, and coughing you may have strained a muscle in your throat. what i would recommend, is to do some light stretching of that sore area everyday. if the problem continues to persist, i would seek another opinion from another doctor
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:48

[Comment From Laura: ]
Thanks for your help– sorry for such a difficult question!!
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:49

[Comment From Jacki: ]
Great, thanks Dr. Ho. I’ll be sure to try that…I need to find something for my headaches!
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:49

[Comment From Raymond: ]
For the detox, if it’s my first time detoxing….how long should I do it for? Or do I have to do it all the time?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:49

Dr.Ho:
hi raymond: how long have you had digestive problems for?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:49

[Comment From Raymond: ]
About 4.5 years now….I always get bloating after I eat….and I have trouble going to the washroom…I don’t even go once a day. You think the cleanse can help me?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:51

Dr.Ho:
8 hours has always been suggested. I don’t think 10 hours is harmful. when you sleep is the time your body recovers and heals. without sleep your immune system is weakens and your body is more prone to being injured or getting sick.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:52

[Comment From Rebecca: ]
How many hours do you recommend sleeping in a day? I love sleeping 8-10 hours, but I hear that’s not great for a 23 year old.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:52

[Comment From Rebecca: ]
Is there a such thing as over-sleeping when you’re sick with a cold, or is it true that the more rest you get, the better you’ll be?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:53

Dr.Ho:
4.5 years of problems: I would recommend you do the detox system for a 90 days. You should not have to take this product or any product for that matter the rest of your life to help treat your bloating issue.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:54

[Comment From Charles: ]

Dr. Ho…I’m so glad I have this opportunity to chat with you. My wife works in retail and is on her feet all day. Do you have anything for foot pain? She always complains about sore and tired feet when she gets home.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:54

[Comment From Raymond: ]
So after the 90 days….will my digestive system be better? Is there something I can take to maintain my system? How often should I detox?
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:55

Dr.Ho:
The detox system will help to cleanse your body of the waste that’s causing the bloating and constipation. And , it will help to retrain your digestive tract to work properly again. So after the 90 days, you will be clean of toxins and years of build up and also, the intestines will be retrained to have peristalsis and eliminate regularly again.
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:55

Sbanduk:
Just 5 minutes left with the famous Dr. Ho!
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:56

Dr.Ho:
Laura: keep me updated and good luck
jacki: try the muscle therapy system. It’s clinically proven and approved by health canada. if you have any questions, call our support line and we will help you step by step
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:57

Dr.Ho:
That’s a great question rebecca
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:57

Dr.Ho:
I recommend when sick to get 8 – 10 hours of sleep. Again, sleep is when your body is going to recover. But don’t forget to get some fresh air too. being couped up in a room filled with your viruses is not healthy either. get up after your sleep and get some fresh air… air out the room and definitely try the cold and flu. it really works
Tuesday October 12, 2010 10:59

Any words for Charles and his wife’s foot pain? I think that’ll have to be the last question of the day!
Tuesday October 12, 2010 11:00

Dr.Ho:
Hi Charles!
Yes, we do have insoles that are very unique and designed for people with feet and back pain / fatigue. They have 110 air tubes on the bottom that will absorb and cushion the shock when she’s standing. So she’s literally walking on a bed of air all day.

Pain relief is just a click away!

There is an excitement that comes with the fall weather that is difficult to put a finger on.  I wonder if it is instinctive. Perhaps it is an evolutionary urge to prepare for winter. I feel the need to get a lot of work done before the snow flies!

If, like me, you have recently been compelled to rake leaves, till the garden in preparation for its winter sleep, or even chop up a massive amount of vegetables for soup or to be frozen, then there is a good chance that you are feeling the effects of the hard work in your sore, aching muscles this morning! Have no fear. Well.ca is here for you. Here are some of the more popular remedies.

  • Voltaren is a topical gel that acts to relieve joint and muscle pain and inflammation often caused by arthritis.
  • There’s nothing like a hot water bottle to help ease those aches and pains!
  • If it’s your back that’s killing you, this back wrap might be just the thing to soothe your tense muscles.
  • For your neck and shoulders– maybe you just need a little magic?
  • If the pain is really severe, you may even want to treat it with medication– Robax Platinum gets great reviews.

Give Thanks for Comfort Foods

Time is running out– turkey season is almost here! It’s that time of year when we get to celebrate some of the greatest foods known to mankind. I don’t know about you, but words like thanksgiving and harvest start my mind reeling with visions of pumpkin pie and squash soup, bushels of apples and gallons of cider– not to mention succulent turkey, fragrant stuffing, and creamy mashed potatoes. It’s enough to make my mouth water, just writing this!

Of course, Well.ca can help you out with your autumn shopping list. Check out these tempting choices that will bring the harvest to your door:

  • First, create some ambiance with a cranberry scented candle.
  • We may not be able to ship you the turkey, but we’ll help with the fixin’s! Try these organic options for poultry seasoning and flavouring your gravy.
  • The best part of carving a pumpkin? Roasting the seeds, of course! If you want to avoid all that work, try some organic pumpkin seeds from Eden Organic.
  • Prefer squash in soup form? Me too. It’s less stringy. Soup gets more enjoyable as the weather gets chilly, so stock up on this fall favourite before the snow flies.
  • There is so much to love about apple season. Warm apple pie, hot apple cider, apple crisp, and if you’re lucky, apple dumplings! You can make apples last all winter long, too. Just keep these delicious dried apple rings on hand, in the pantry.
  • Throw some dried cranberries in the stuffing to add a delicious zing to your traditional recipe.
  • Plan on overeating? Don’t worry, we’ve got all the best remedies for your post-turkey indigestion.

And before you chow down, don’t forget to thank a farmer near you, for your fall harvest feast!
