Make An Impression: The Red Lip

We all notice her and think “wow, how does she do it?”. No, I am not talking about walking in her 5 inch stiletto’s (although I do wonder about that as well), I am talking about choosing the best red lipstick! Most of us think this is not an easy task but believe it or not it can be perfected and you will be turning heads the next time you dare to wear your red lips.

Wearing and maintaining your lipstick can be a pain when you are on the go all day long but it is about confidence – which we all have. I am a busy, on the go woman but I adore wearing red lipstick and feel as though my inner confidence shines through when my pout looks the part. Here are some tips and product fav’s to create (and maintain) a fabulous red lip.

1. Hydrate – I never go to bed without applying my Blistex Lip Medex – it has been a favourite since I was a child. It keeps my lips hydrated and smooth until the morning which helps when applying my lip colour (even when it is at 5:30am).

2. Apply a light layer of concealer or foundation to your lips (my fav is Covergirl Smoothers Concealer in Illuminator).

3. Outline your lips with a lip liner, and be sure to match the lip liner to your lipstick.

4. Apply your selected colour (my fav is Vasanti’s soft finish matte lipstick in USA) with a lip brush (Vasanti has a nice lip brush which allows you to control your application). Applying with a brush prevents you from over applying the colour.

5. Blot lips with a tissue.

6. Touch up if needed with your lip brush for a long lasting finish.

Not sure how to pick the right shade for you? Trust me, there is one out there for you, you just have to find the right shade. Here are some of my suggestions:

Fair complexions should choose cool reds, such as a cherry- or rose-red.
Redheads look great in warm reds, such as a tomato- or brick-red.
Medium or olive complexions can pull off a true red.
Darker complexions are stunning in deep reds, such as a plum-red

  1. Hi There,

I’ve just gone through your website and the various products you are offering. I am confused by the the huge discrepancy between the non-toxic body care products on your site and the extremely toxic ones ( ie Dove or Brut deodarant, vaseline products of any type…) . Since you seem to be promoting healthy body care products and your site is labelled “well.ca” I think it is extremely important to read the labels on some of the products you are carrying ( including some of the “natural” ones – some of them contain seriously harmful chemicals for anyone to be putting on their skin). Some of these products are known to cause “unwellness”.

As a researcher and former producer of totally organic skin care products I hope sites such as yours will step up the research of all products you choose to promote in the name of wellness. It’s a great way to educate the consumer and ultimately make our world a better place by refusing to buy toxic and harmful ingredients of any type in any product.

The non-harmful, healthy body care products and supplements do exist and many of them are produced right here in Canada. Alive magazine, Vista are two sources for finding some of these products. On the west coast there are several companies – Sea Wench ( from Tofino, Vancouver Island), Figs and Honey (Salt Spring Island, BC), Isagenix.com ( fabulous company from Colorado, USA)- bar none, the highest quality supplement/cleansing products in the world.

    Happy researching!

    Best regards,
    S.M. Longpre
