Fitness Challenge! [Wellness Wednesday]

For the month of August the Well.ca staff of our Toronto office are entering into a friendly competition to increase their fitness! With the help of Health and Fitness Specialist Andi McHugh they have set personal goals which they will work towards over the next week. McHugh will be guiding and offering advice to help them reach their targets.

Studies have shown that your physical fitness is linked to the fitness of those around you. This makes teaming up with coworkers, friends and family a great way to keep focused. Working together means making changes is easier. Fewer donuts and more skim milk is already having an impact on the office!

Of course, Well.ca has many great products for helping you attain your health and fitness goals! Check out below for just a sampling!

How to Hydrate and Maintain Energy in Summer

Most people are good at keeping cool in summer – but have you been staying hydrated? While drinking lots of water is a good strategy, you might be missing out on retaining and replenishing the vitamins and electrolytes that keep you in top shape.

Saving exercise and sport activities for cooler times in the day, covering up and staying in the shade, and ensuring easy access to water are all great ways to support proper hydration. Eat Right Ontario has even more tips for staying hydrated on their website.

Well.ca has some great health boosting products that will support your vitamin and electrolyte intake, keeping your energy levels high so you can make the most of summer!

Instant Drink Mix

Emergen-C Drink Mix

Emergen-C

Emergen-C is an instant drink mix packed with electrolytes and vitamins B and C.  It is great for adding a healthy punch to your water.  B vitamins promote a healthy nervous system and vitamin C supports immune function,  healthy teeth, gums and bones. Emergen-C is good for athletes: it contains less sugar than other sports drinks and is super easy to add to your waterbottle!

Heat Warning – Staying Cool in High Temperatures

Heat warnings are being issued across the country this weekend. Plans to celebrate Canada Day, Pride, and the Euro Cup Final (or all three!) should include strategies to stay safe in the predicted heat and humidity. Fortunately, this summer has brought some super awesome products to Well.ca that make chilling out a breeze.

Cool Treats: The fan favourite Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker is easily one of the coolest products we carry: it makes delicious frozen treats in minutes! Takeya has also come out with excellent summer beverage products, including a jug that turns tea into iced tea in minutes, and the Flash Chill Lemonade Maker - both of which can even be stored on their side when full to save space! Even the old-fashioned ice pack has gotten an update from Kids Konserve! The U-Konserve Ice Pak comes with a cover to keep sweat from making your cooled goodies soggy!

Shady Days: After a long winter the sun feels good on our skin, but it is important to remember that covering up is one of the best ways to stay safe. Keeping baby safe is priority number one for sun-wise moms and dads, which means a LittleLife Carrier Sun Shade for their carriers and Adventure Baby Banz Sunglasses for their cute little faces. i Play Ultimate Reversible Bucket Sun Protection Hats are another adorable way to keep little ones protected.

Prevention: Of course the key to staying sun safe is prevention. Keeping hydrated by carrying along a waterbottle or two is a great way to beat the heat and save money. Slathering on high SPF lotion like Green Beaver Fragrance Free Sunscreen is always recommended. And if the mercury gets too high, then staying inside and opening up the arts and crafts drawer is always a good option!

Green Coffee Bean Extract

Green bean coffee extract has been making waves online ever since Dr. Oz made a scientific study on the supplement very public. The results look promising, suggesting that study participants lost a scientifically significant amount of weight with no changes to activity or diet compared to a control group. The results have shocked dieticians, and the media is buzzing about the new supplement.

Green coffee beans contain a natural compound called chlorogenic acid, which is reported to be the active ingredient contributing to weightloss. This compound is destroyed during roasting which means it must be extracted beforehand.

Genesis Today’s Green Coffee Bean Extract  is 50% chlorogenic acids, which supports healthy body weight, body fat levels, cardiovascular function and blood sugar levels.

Camino Fair Trade Chocolate

Michelle

Well.ca staffer Michelle recently sat down for a chat with Camino, a fair trade chocolate company owned by the Ottawa-based La Siembra Co-operative. Camino is a company about connecting the dots between the food we eat and where it comes from.

Can you explain how fair trade works, and how Camino operates differently from big corporations?

Fair trade
really focuses on community.  Isolated, small scale farmers often do not know anything about selling their product, like what the price of beans would in the international market.  In order to get fair trade certification, they have to come together as a co-operative.  This gives them more opportunities for knowledge and accountability.  Once they are registered with the Fair Trade International, Camino can work with them.  Fair trade is about transparency, long term commitment, and knowing who you work with.

If you could share one thing with readers, what would it be?

Fairtrade Canada
First, I would tell them to pay attention to who is behind the product.  When a big corporation that is not fair trade has a fair trade product, it is good for awareness but what are their motives?  Camino is about more than this, because our motives are about social justice, sustainable communities, and the environment, more than just about what looks profitable or trendy.

Also, I would say to support your local farmers, gardens and communities here.  Increasingly the fair trade movement is focusing on local fair trade. When organic, fair trade items cannot be found at the local level (like cocoa beans since they don’t grow here), support farmers in other countries.

This post is also perfectly timed, as Michelle has informed me that the Camino Snack Bars have just gone live on Well.ca. Personally, I had no idea that the Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate Snack Bar existed – needless to say there are already ten in my shopping cart.

Well.ca Has What the Elderly Need – Guest Post by Amber Paley

Taking care of the elderly who can no longer take care of themselves can be a full-time job.  Luckily, Well.ca has products every caretaker needs!  Below you’ll find various products that will help you take care of your loved one.

LifeSource Blood Pressure Monitor One Step Plus Memory

According to Yale University Clinical Professor of Medicine Dr. Marvin Moser, hypertension, i.e. high blood pressure, affects 2 out of 3 of those over 75 years old. Thus it is important that you periodically check your loved one’s blood pressure to ensure it is normal, or if your loved one has been diagnosed with hypertension, you should check to make sure the condition hasn’t gotten worse. And this product, which is recommended by the Canadian Hypertension Society, makes it easy to notice variations; it records the most recent 30 readings you’ve taken with the machine and even averages them.  It makes your life easier; there’s no need to record your loved one’s blood pressure every time you take it and you’ll always be able to find the recordings because they’re in the machine!

Card Health Care Metal Key Ring Pill Tote

Never again will you have to deal with multiple pill bottles or Ziploc bags that result in crushed pills.  This easy, lightweight, and durable pill tote makes traveling with your loved one and dispensing his/her medication easy and convenient.
And Well.ca doesn’t stop there with its pill dispensing products.  They offer everything from pill organizers of multiple sizes to pill crushers, splitters, and grinders.

AquaSense Bath Safety Rail

This is just one bath safety rail that Well.ca offers.  This bath safety product is easy to install and provides the elderly with a sturdy and secure rail to grip while they bathe.  As people get older, their joints become painful, their strength deteriorates, and their mobility becomes limited.  Rails in their showers/baths are very important because it decreases their chances of falling while standing up and allows them a secure place to hold onto if they feel unstable.

PharmaSystems Med ID Bracelet

A medical ID bracelet is a necessity for the elderly.  Anything can happen at any time.  It is important that if an elder gets lost or is in a public place and a medical emergency arises that medical personnel know if he/she is allergic to anything or has any preexisting conditions.  Well.ca offers several options, including bracelets and necklaces already pre-engraved with heart condition, epilepsy, etc.
This particular bracelet is stainless steel and blank so that you can have your elder’s conditions engraved onto it.

Amber Paley is a guest post and article writer bringing to us some of the products Well.ca offers to the elderly.
Amber spends much of her professional life writing about nursing home abuse.

Coconuts – The New Miracle Nut

Coconut ProductsI recently noticed coconut oil and water are creating big buzz; everyone from beauty and health experts and even Dr. Oz are claiming the “miracle nut” is beneficial for just about everything including curing hangovers, normalizing blood pressure, promoting healthy hair and skin and even curbing appetites. Well.ca has put together an entire category of the best coconut products for your health, beauty and wellness!

Now, anyone who knows me well is quite aware that I’m all about jumping on bandwagons especially when it’s an all natural product with fantastic benefits, so I thought I’d share some of the benefits of coconut oil and water and how you can incorporate them into your health and beauty regime.

Coconut Oil for Hair:

Coconut oil has some amazing properties it helps moisture your tresses, prevents brakeage, and for the curly hair folks like me, curbs frizz! Using coconut oil can be a bit tricky because if you use too much you will be left with oily hair, so I suggest using a small amount as a pre-shampoo treatment for about 30 minutes then wash it out with shampoo followed by conditioner.

Coconut Oil for Skin:

The shorter days is a clear sign that old man winter is right around the corner, which means many of us will be left with dry chapped skin. Applying coconut oil after a shower can help keep your skin moisturized even on the coldest days – another added benefit, you’ll smell like coconuts all day!

Coconut Water’s Health Benefits:

Coconut water is packed with minerals, vitamins and electrolytes that help replenish hydration levels in the body. In addition, since coconut water is rich in potassium, many health care professionals have said it can help reduce the risk of hypertension and strokes. Drinking coconut water on a daily basis can also boost your immune system, circulation and support weight loss.

If you’re a coconut fan, let us know how you incorporate it in your life!

Embarrassed by Excessive Sweating? Try Hydrosal Gel!

With the summer coming up quickly (but arguably not quickly enough), many Canadians are getting anxious about facing a fear that the warm summer months bring: sweat.

In fact, almost one million Canadians experience excessive sweating, though nearly 60% don’t seek medical advice because they are too embarrassed or they do not know the treatment options.

Hydrosal Gel
is a topical gel treatment for excessive sweating. It contains a unique combination of effective ingredients that are clinically proven to fight excessive sweating. This includes 15% aluminum chloride hexahydrate which is proven more effective than other aluminum salts typically used in regular antiperspirants. And they’ve just started selling a 30 ml metered dose pump to make applications that much easier!

Well.ca customers have ranted and raved about this product in our reviews section on this page! Finally, they’ve found a non-irritating and effective way to control a very common concern.

Gone are the days of being embarrassed by your excessive sweating or having to carry around a change of clothes! Get outside and enjoy the summer season with Hydrosal :)

Cures for the Winter Blues

WinterWhile some Canadians will head south this winter to escape the cold, some of us will need to find another way to cure ourselves of the winter blues.  We’ll be stuck here where it is cold and dark (not that we do not love Canada but sometimes winter is just too long for my liking).  Luckily there are lots of new products on the market to help us cope and be prepared to battle those winter blues.

Some tips for surviving winter

  • Vitamin D is all the more important when we are not able to get enough from the sun in the winter months
  • B-complex vitamins can boost your energy levels and prevent depression
  • Immune support products such as Immunity-FX can help strengthen your body’s natural defenses and prevent colds and flus
  • Lavender is good for depression and releases serotonin to produce a calming influence in the body.  Try using this lavender bath foam
  • Bright light therapy is widely used to ease the winter blues. 20-30 minutes a day is all it takes to lighten up your days!  Well.ca carries more than 10 S.A.D. lights.
  • Dawn Simulation allows you to always wake up in the light.  The hugely popular SunRise alarm clock uses a dawn simulator that allows you to wake up in a lighted room – a great benefit to early risers, shift workers and everyone when we’re stuck in the winter months.

Of course a healthy diet and plenty of exercise will help as well.  This year I’m going to embrace winter and enjoy all the things that make winter special: tobogganing, skiing, skating and hot chocolate!

Hoping everyone has a wonderful winter. Warm wishes from Well.ca.
