Uses
Relief of nasal congestion due to colds, allergies, rhinitis and sinusitis. Can also be used for headache, tubal block and serious otitis media associated with nasal congestion. Xylometazoline facilitates rhinoscopy and is a useful pre- and post-operative adjunct.
Dosage/Directions for use
Adults and children 12 years of age or over: With head upright, spray 1 or 2 times into each nostril. Breathe deeply. May be used every 8 to 10 hours. Not recommended for children under 12 years of age unless directed by a physician.
Precautions
A prolonged or excessive use may cause rebound congestion or intensify the congestion. It is very important not to exceed the recommended dose. If condition persists after 3 days, consult a physician.
Because topical nasal decongestants are rapidly absorbed by the nasal mucous membrane, they are susceptible to cause systemic effects especially when the mucous membrane is inflamed. Systemic effects can also be due to gastrointestinal absorption when the medicine is given in excess so that the nasally applied solution is swallowed. Infants, young children and the elderly are more susceptible to the reactions mentioned above.
Clinical data are inadequate to establish conditions for safe use in pregnancy.
To prevent contamination, replace cap right after use. To minimize the risk of spreading infections, spray dispensers should not be used by more than one person, and tips of the dispensers should be rinsed with hot water and dry with a clean tissue following use.
