I've tried a few different products for spot lightening - and this is by far the most effective. I put on my moisturizer first (the packaging doesn't say anything about using a moisturizer with it - but it doesn't seem to lessen it's effects) and then I put it all over my face. I have many splotches and find doing spot application impossible. It not only reduces the appearance of spots in days, the alpha Glycolic Acid leaves my skin looking great.
Just don't forget to keep using sun screen! or the spots will come back (if you have a hyper-pigmentation issue like I do).
It does smell pretty bad when you put it on, but once it's dried it loses it smell.
