But you also know that as kids get older, it can be a challenge to get them to stay still long enough to coat them with SPF. That’s why it’s important to teach them good sun care habits early. Even little kids know that it’s important to brush their teeth twice daily and wash their hands frequently to help them stay healthy; educating your children that applying sunscreen serves the same purpose. Bonus: Coaching kids to apply SPF to themselves means you won’t have to chase them down to do it yourself!

You should apply sunscreen every day, no matter what.

It’s easy to think that applying SPF is only for trips to the beach, long days spent outside, or the summer season. But the truth is that sunscreen is necessary whenever the sun is out, even on cloudy days. The sun’s rays are strong and can easily break through the clouds, even if you can’t see them.

Sunglasses don’t just look cool—they’re an essential part of sun care.

Whether you’re doing your best rock star impression or keeping bright light out of your eyes, your sunglasses are hard at work. So long as they’re labeled UV400, sunglasses are actually like sunscreen for your eyes, blocking the sun’s rays to shield them from damage.

Whenever possible, stay in the shade.

The easiest way to protect your skin from the sun is to stay out of it! Do your best to seek out shade, especially during the sun’s peak hours from about 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sunscreen is a must, regardless of your skin tone.

It’s a common belief that people with deeper complexions don’t need to wear sunscreen and that only those with fairer skin do. That’s not at all the case. All skin is susceptible to UV damage, so go ahead and slather yourself.

You don’t just apply sunscreen once daily.

Sunscreen isn’t a one-and-done thing—you have to reapply it at least every two hours. If you’re swimming or sweating, you should be applying even more frequently than that to make sure that your skin is fully protected.

If you have a sunburn, treat it right away.

A bad sunburn can be as harmful to the skin as a traditional burn, so you’ll want to treat it ASAP. You can apply cool compresses to take as much heat out of your skin as you can, which will help reduce inflammation and discomfort, as well as drink plenty of water and moisturize frequently to prevent dehydration inside and out. Be sure not to pop any blisters or pick at peeling skin, which will likely only do more damage.

Sunscreen won’t only protect your skin now—it’ll keep it healthy for years to come.

The pain of a sunburn goes away, but what you can’t see is the sun damage left behind. Even small amounts of sun exposure damage the skin, which puts you at risk of developing skin cancer as you age. Applying SPF also will keep your skin looking fresh, healthy, and smooth—sun damage makes you look older than you actually are.

Shop Sunscreens Your Kid Will Love

If your kid hates the sunscreen you’ve handed them, they’ll never apply it, and without applying SPF, they’re putting their health at risk. By giving them formulas that smell good, feel good, and are easy to apply, they’ll actually look forward to using sunscreen.

Sun Bum’s new collection for kids features three unique formulas—Clear SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion, Clear SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray, and Clear SPF 50 Sunscreen Face Stick—that can be applied to wet or dry skin, go on clear, and smell great thanks to natural fragrances.
