Douglas Laboratories Xtra-Cell® Thymus™ nf (Non-Frozen) helps to maintain immune function.
The thymus is a lymphoid organ located below the neck. It decreases in size as people age in a process called thymic involution, which begins after the first year of life. The thymus functions by releasing certain thymic factors that affect its own regulation as well as the functions of other cells throughout the body. These thymic factors (including thymosins, thymopoietin, thymic factor X, and serum thymic factor) tend to reach their peak at puberty and decline with age.
Zinc is an essential trace element involved in most major metabolic pathways. Numerous studies support the fundamental role of zinc in promoting normal immune responses in humans. Immune cells must be able to rapidly divide in order to respond to daily challenges, and they depend on adequate amounts of dietary zinc to promote their development. Research demonstrates that zinc stimulates cell division in lymphocytes and increases their phagocytic activity. Zinc is especially necessary for T cell proliferation in the thymus as a cofactor for thymulin, a hormone involved in T cell differentiation and function. Research has found that zinc deficiency, which can result in thymic atrophy, is associated with decreased immune health.
