This is the second one we've purchased. Our son started using this cup around 9 months old and loves it. It didn't take very long for him to grasp the concept. It does splatter some water when he throws it onto the floor due to the force but general spills don't happen at all.

I bought this cup for my son when he was 6 month old. He didn't get the cup and I couldn't teach him how to use it. So I just took off the silicon top and I got him to drink out of it like a normal cup but with me assisting him. Fast forward to when my son is 13 months old. I just got him off the bottle and drinking out of a free flow sippy cup. I noticed that he was leaving bit indentation on the spout of his sippy cup. It dawned on me that he might be able to use the wow cup with the silicon top on it successfully. I put the top on and he instantly figured it out because he was putting pressure on the lid with his mouth/teeth. For parents who are having trouble using this cup, the secret is not sucking through the lid but putting pressure on the lid via through the child's mouth.
