Covers my grey roots, even though it claims it won’t!
***Please note that my hair is very fine, and my base colour is fairly light! This may not work the same way on thick, coarse, or dark hair***
I’m so happy that Well.ca carries Kristin Ess products, because if not for them, we Canadians would have to drive down to the US to get it! My stylist is always fully-booked, and it can be hard to get an appointment with her... leaving me with grey roots growing out that are not my favourite! She suggested I purchase this for in-between appointments, explaining that it is sort of like the toner she uses after she does my highlights. My natural colour is light brown with quite a bit of grey/white on the crown. The colourist does blonde highlights around the “t-section” in an attempt to camouflage the greys. The first time I purchased this, the colour came out too “yellow” and warm... however it magically DID tone-in the greys to blend with the rest of my hair, which Kristin Ess says it is not likely to do. My hair is very fine, so maybe that helps it pick up the colour?... so the second time I used this product, I also purchased Smoky Topaz and mixed the two in equal parts. That made a more brown-ish red colour, but still not what I was going for. Just note that Tortoiseshell by itself came out more yellow/red than the photo on the box. The colour in the bottle looks exactly like turmeric, if that gives you a better idea! Next time, I think I will try Copper Penny, as I would like to go more red. It doesn’t affect the condition of my hair one way or the other, which is nice, because other colour products will tend to dry it out. Will purchase again, it is a good product, a good price, easy to use, and from her Instagram, Kristin Ess seems like a lovely person (she rescues dogs!), so I am happy to support her business!

Wanted to love it!
I wanted to see if this would help make my natural curls more glossy but I really didn’t notice any difference and I followed the directions closely. Some commenters had good results using on dry hair but it specifically says not to on the box and - because I hadn’t used it before - I was hesitant to try that. For reference, I have fine wavy/curly hair that runs on the dry side.

Recommend!
I’ve used Kristin Ess glosses 3 times and this colour twice. Really impressed with how easy it is to use and how effective it is. It does add shine and I like the colour. It’s more subtle than the Copper Penny shade but it’s still enough to tint my gray roots even though it says it won’t.

Does what it says
I bought this after I got highlights that were too bright for me. It add warmth and a gold tone to my hair that is really nice.
