It has good depth and width without making the bag too heavy and uncomfortable for the thinner straps. The opening part is rather rigid but can be pulled open farther to fit things in. I wouldn't expect to fit large items in there without some finesse or until it breaks in over time. The fabric inside is a bit thin so I would avoid anything heavy in the slip pocket. The zippers run very smooth.
When I first received this bag I was excited to use it cross-body as well, but if you use one strap cross-body at full length, the bag will sit right under your chest, not at hip level. I will break down how I worked with this for others in case it helps.
So each single strap is made with two parts: One with a hook and a buckle -and- one with a strap with holes and a hook. You adjust length much like you do a belt. For cross-body so the bag hits the hip, I used one regular full strap with both parts and then I attached that hook to the buckle of the buckle and hook section of the other strap.
