Description
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (previously Advanced Retinoid 2%) combines two forms of next-generation retinoid actives:
a) A 2% concentration of Granactive Retinoid which is a complex of solubilized Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR). HPR is a highly-advanced form of retinoid which is, in fact, a non-prescription ester of all-trans direct retinoic acid that offers a multi-fold better effect against signs of ageing than retinol, retinyl palmitate and nearly all other forms of non-prescription retinoid;
b) A sustained-delivery form of pure retinol in a protective capsule system which supports both the delivery and the effect of Granactive Retinoid.
Both forms of retinoid used avoid the irritation associated with retinoids (including retinol) use while delivering better visible results against signs of ageing.
This product uses next-generation retinoid active technologies which have been shown to achieve better reduction in signs of ageing than retinol without irritation. These technologies cannot be compared directly with retinol itself in terms of concentration because they include a different retinoid molecule, in a similar way that Retinol cannot be compared with Retinoic Acid in terms of concentration. If you have interest in a retinol product, please refer to our Retinol portfolio above which products contain pure retinol and cost less since many retinol technologies cost less than their next-generation counterparts like Granactive Retinoid.
While the new offerings of Granactive Retinoid in Squalane offer a very-light-weight solution for better compatibility with several steps in a regimen, the existing formula continues to be a creamy hydrating emulsion for those who prefer this format.
Caution: Retinoids can make the skin more sensitive to UV radiation. Sun protection is particularly important when using retinoids. This product must not be used in conjunction with other retinoids including retinol or retinoic acid. This product is not a treatment for acne. Acne-prone skin may experience a temporary increase in acne during the first few weeks of using any form of retinoid including those used in this formulation.
Note: When pregnant or breastfeeding, it is recommended to avoid any skincare products containing retinoids such as formulations with Granactive Retinoid or Retinol.
Directions: Apply a small amount to face in the PM as part of your skincare regimen, after water serums but before heavier treatments. Do not use with other retinoid treatments. Avoid unprotected solar exposure. Store in a cool, dry place.
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Ethyl Linoleate, Propanediol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Cetearyl Isononanoate, Bisabolol, Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, Retinol, Tasmannia Lanceolata Fruit/Leaf Extract, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Glyceryl Stearate, Ceteareth-12, Ceteareth-20, Cetearyl Alcohol, Carrageenan, Xanthan gum, Acacia Senegal Gum, Cetyl Palmitate, Sucrose Laurate, Polysorbate 20, Isoceteth-20, Behentrimonium Chloride, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Disodium EDTA, Dehydroacetic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.

So, I feel like a complete idiot. Let me tell you why.
I did loads of research on acne treatments and one of the things most recommended was retinol. I came onto Well, found a product in the retin-family and merrily bought it expecting improvements to my acne. Two months in, and I really have not noticed any difference in my skin from this. It is only now I see in the fine print: 'not a treatment for acne.'
Well. Indeed it is not.
Just posting this review to warn any other acne sufferers who somehow manage to miss this disclaimer in their retinol-based excitement as I did. I'll just be here shaking my head at myself.
On the plus side, the cream does feel and smell very nice when you rub it in. So there's that.

Not sure I love this product but I do like it. I have used retinol products regularly in the past so I might be able to tolerate something a bit stronger to see better results. Having said that, I experience no irritation or redness with this and since its meant to be a gentle form of retinol, the product lives up to what its supposed to be. I would definitely recommend this to someone new to retinols.

At this stage of my life, I need a good retinol product in my life. This granactive 2% emulsion is the best when it comes to non irritating the skin. After 2 weeks I can already see the difference in my complexion, my dehydrated lines are less apparent, and my skin is overall balanced in the morning.

Fantastic product and a great price point. I've been using it for over a week and it has already helped to even out my skin tone. I have sensitive skin and haven't had any irritation with this or any of the The Ordinary products. Definitely have recommended this to others.

A staple in my skincare regime, I've been using for over a year and have re-purchased a couple of times. It's non-irritating and leaves my skin silky. Not sure it has made a big difference on texture compared to prescription strength products but I continue to use it.

It is the first retinol product I try. I have sensitive acne prone skin and it didnâÂÂt cause any irritation. I feel like itâÂÂs helping my acne and doesnâÂÂt dry out my skin at all. I wake up with soft skin and diminished acne!

This feels like a more oil hydrating formulation than I expected but enjoy. It is non irritating and when I wake up, my skin is still hydrated yet more defined. I use this in the PM after the Arbutin 2% followed by a good cream.

I'm giving this product 4 stars, as i haven't been using it long enough to give a proper review. I do like the texture of the solution and it sinks into skin nicely. I use this every 2-3 nights after cleansing and toning.
