Zinc Pyrithione, the active ingredient in Zinc Zap Shampoo (1%) is a well known antibacterial/antifungal agent used in many anti-dandruff products. Itchy, red, flaky scalps leave their telltale signs behind: and the unsightly flakes, so often visible on dark clothing, are about as socially acceptable as bad breath or body odour.
It is normal for every individual's scalp and skin to produce very light, almost invisible scaling. When flakes and scales begin to happen, they become more visible. If this scaling is associated with itching and redness of the scalp, this may be an indication of the presence of microorganisms such as staphylococcus, streptococcus, or p.ovale, feeding on excess oil and sebum of the scalp. The redness (irritation, inflammation) is simply the body's response to the presence of these microorganisms and will usually subside with their control.
