Lifesavers

In 1912 Life Savers were introduced in the original Pep-O-Mint flavour.  To differentiate these mints from other square, pillow-shaped products, the candy maker punched a hole in the middle of the mints. Since the mints looked like mini life preservers, he called them Life Savers.
