Description
Vanilla, derived from the Spanish word "vaina" (meaning little pod), is a spice collected from the vine of the vanilla orchid. Growing and harvesting the vanilla seed is very labour intensive, making it the second most expensive spice after saffron. Kurundu vanilla is fair trade, certified organic and grown in Sri Lanka. As a legacy of colonization, spice growers are still poorly paid. By supporting Fair Trade, you make the world a fairer place by helping to provide adequate housing, medical assistance, and education funds for spice growers and their families.

Kurundu Vanilla Pods are packaged two pods per tube for maximum freshness. This pack contains 4 tubes (8 vanilla pods total).

To use vanilla pods in cooking and baking, begin by splitting a bean lengthwise with a knife or scissors. Scrape some of the bean off and add at the beginning of your recipe.

You can also use vanilla pods to create a fragrant vanilla-sugar that can be used in cakes, puddings, pies and ice creams. Simply store whole vanilla beans split lengthwise in a jar of caster sugar and allow 3-4 weeks for the flavour to suffuse the sugar completely.

Or, try making your own vanilla extract by adding 2-3 beans split lengthwise to 1 cup of vodka or rum (minimum 40% alcohol) in a glass jar with an air-tight lid. After shaking the jar, store in a cool dark place for 2 months remembering to shake it once in a while. Your homemade vanilla extract will last years. Just top it off with vodka or rum after each use.
